What It Is
A 37-amino-acid peptide (beginning with two leucine residues, hence “LL-37”) cleaved from the precursor protein hCAP18, produced by neutrophils, epithelial cells, and other immune cells as part of the innate immune response.
Research Mechanism
LL-37 has been studied for direct antimicrobial activity via membrane disruption of bacterial cell walls, as well as immunomodulatory roles including chemoattraction of immune cells and promotion of angiogenesis in wound-healing models (Dürr et al., 2006, review in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta — search PubMed ).
