What It Is
A nine-amino-acid cyclic peptide synthesized in the hypothalamus and released both centrally (as a neuromodulator) and peripherally (as a hormone), acting through the oxytocin receptor, a G-protein-coupled receptor.
Research Mechanism
Foundational animal-model research linked oxytocin signaling to pair-bonding and maternal behavior, particularly in prairie vole models comparing monogamous and non-monogamous species (Carter, 1998, Psychoneuroendocrinology — search PubMed ). Subsequent research has examined its role in modulating amygdala reactivity and HPA-axis stress responses.
Research Applications
- Social behavior and attachment models
- HPA axis and stress-response modulation
- Oxytocin receptor signaling pharmacology
