What It Is

A 28-amino-acid peptide widely distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, acting through VPAC1 and VPAC2 G-protein-coupled receptors, structurally related to PACAP and secretin-family peptides.

Research Mechanism

VIP/VPAC signaling has been studied for its immunomodulatory effects, including shifting cytokine profiles in immune cell culture models, as well as its role in synchronizing neurons of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) — the brain’s central circadian pacemaker (Vosko et al., 2007, review in General and Comparative Endocrinology search PubMed ). It is also studied in gastrointestinal and pulmonary smooth-muscle relaxation models.

Research Applications

  • Circadian pacemaker (SCN) signaling research
  • Immune modulation and cytokine profile studies
  • GI and pulmonary smooth-muscle models
